How to Attain Shikai

verified 2026-07-10 · VV: Ultimatum factions

How to Attain Shikai is the Soul Reaper progression guide for VV: Ultimatum - a meditation questline from Level 25 through the Blank World, the Inner World and a 3-phase boss fight to unlock Shikai and its abilities.

Shikai is the Soul Reaper awakening, and the road to it is the faction's whole mid-game. Shinigami progression is locked until Level 25; from there, everything runs on meditation. You can meditate at any point, but each successful meditation requires enough banked XP - try without it and your character simply falls asleep. The signal that you are ready is whispers/words appearing on your screen, not to be confused with the proximity message 'You hear whispers nearby'.

The questline moves through two otherworldly spaces. First the Blank World, a bell-hunt guided by blue particles; then your Inner World, which unfogs across visits until your Shikai Spirit appears and challenges you - a mini boss, then a 3-phase boss fight for the mode itself, and finally a 'find your weapon' epilogue that unlocks your actual Shikai abilities.

One big caveat: the community documentation marks this entire process as SUBJECT TO CHANGE, so expect steps and thresholds to shift with updates. The stage-by-stage flow below reflects the current documentation.

The Blank World

After a few meditations you are teleported to the Blank World. Follow the blue particles - they lead to bells, and interacting with a bell turns it blue to mark completion. Two bells carry special requirements: defeating 2 Shinigami NPCs, and solving a riddle (fail the riddle and you must gain more XP to retry).

After your first attempt you should receive the 'Kill a Boss' quest. Complete it, gather more XP, and meditate again to be sent back to the Blank World for the remaining bells.

The Inner World and your Shikai Spirit

After a set number of meditations you are sent to your Inner World. The first visit is a dead end - it is extremely foggy, so head back. On the next visit the fog is cleared but there is still nothing for you; head back again. On the visit after that, your Shikai Spirit is placed somewhere on the map - find them, talk, and you are teleported back.

Gain XP for another whisper and meditate one last time. Find your Shikai Spirit again and speak to them; if they say you are not strong enough, gather more XP. When you are ready, a mini boss fight begins. Winning it grants your released zanpakuto and returns you to the Spirit - choose 'I am ready' in the dialogue to trigger the 3-phase boss fight.

The 3-phase boss fight

Phase 1: in base form, the boss uses a unique, unobtainable moveset of Speed and Strength plus passives - after its death you get a minor healthpack. Phase 2: the second boss uses the same moveset. Phase 3: at low HP in the second phase, the boss awakens Shikai, healing to around half and equipping your own Shikai weapon against you.

If you fail, you can retry without cost. Beating the fight grants Shikai mode - but not yet its abilities.

Finding Yourself (unlocking abilities)

After defeating your Shikai you need to meditate up to three more times. Speaking with your Shikai Spirit then yields a new dialogue - 'What's the next step?' - and you are teleported into a white void to find your Shikai weapon. You can summon your weapon as a visual reference during the search. Once you find it and initiate dialogue, your Shikai abilities finally unlock.

Community-documented (June 2026): your Shikai or Resurreccion name is assigned at random, and there is currently no way to change it - a frequently requested feature.

FAQ

Why does my character fall asleep when meditating?

You do not have enough XP for a successful meditation. Gain more XP until whispers/words appear on your screen - that is the readiness signal (distinct from the 'You hear whispers nearby' proximity message).

Do I lose anything if I fail the Shikai boss fight?

No - the 3-phase boss fight can be retried without cost.

I beat the boss but can't use Shikai abilities - is that a bug?

No, it is the last stage of the quest. Meditate up to three more times, ask your Shikai Spirit 'What's the next step?', then find your Shikai weapon in the white void (you can summon it as a reference) to unlock the abilities.
