Grey Sprite is the most basic and plentiful Sprite, sitting at the bottom of a crafting chain that turns it into Blue, Green, Purple, Yellow, Pink, and Red Sprite, and eventually into Rainbow Sprite.
It has no direct use in unit evolutions or Equipment crafting on its own. Its entire purpose is being upgraded into a color Sprite, or received back when a higher Sprite is broken down.

How to get Grey Sprite
Grey Sprite drops from Regular, Daily, and Weekly Challenges, and from Mastery Stages, making it the easiest Sprite to accumulate in bulk. It's also produced automatically whenever a color Sprite or Rainbow Sprite gets broken down through Crafting.
What it does
On its own, Grey Sprite has no evolution or Equipment use. Its value comes entirely from Crafting: five Grey Sprite convert into one Blue, Green, Purple, Yellow, Pink, or Red Sprite, which is what unit evolutions and Armory Forge Equipment recipes actually call for.
Crafting Grey Sprite into color Sprites
Every color Sprite (Blue, Green, Purple, Yellow, Pink, Red) is crafted the same way: 5x Grey Sprite for 1x of that color.
